ACM Student Chapter

Our Objectives

PUCIT-ACM Student Chapter aims at providing the solutions to the academic problems. This is not something regarding research society. This is general platform to promote knowledge, awareness and skills among multiple domains. PUCIT ACM is not and cannot be confined to single area of interest. A number of tasks, seminars, competitions and training sessions are being conducted on the platform of PUCIT-ACM Student Chapter.


·       Final Year Project (FYP) seminar

Venue: PUCIT Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore

PUCIT ACM Student Chapter presented One Day seminar to provide final year students with direction in their capstone project, containing FYP related fears and wariness. Furthermore project classification, project idea, project structure, project documentation, NOT-TO-DOs of FYP were also the part of this seminar.

·       Python Workshop

Python is a good High level programming language for beginners, which means a programmer, can focus on what to do instead of how to do it. Writing programs in Python takes less time than in another language. Being interpreted language, PUCIT-ACM Student Chapter brought a chance to learn the latest technology in the Software Industry. To make students’ summers useful, PASC organized a 10 day workshop covering the concepts of Python Programming Language and Django framework of Python from basic to advanced levels.

·       Natural Language Processing Seminar

 Venue: PUCIT, Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore

Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) both are emerging areas of computer sciences. Different research groups around the globe are working over these areas in educational institutes and in industry. Arabic language is also under consideration of researchers, there are a lot of high quality stuffs available in this regard.

This talk covered following two areas

1. NLP techniques applied on Quran text.
a. Conventional computational techniques for Quran.
b. Advance level efforts in this area.
c. Development phases and current position of presenter’s work.
d. Future working dimensions.

2. AI base systems for Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic. 
a. Development of Algorithms for Arabic Conjugations systems.
b. Development of translation systems for these conjugation systems for Urdu and English.
c. Development of teaching modules.
d. Development of examination modules.

TARGETED AUDIENCE: Final year project students.
People interested in areas of NLP and AI.
E-Learning development.

·       Data science & its application workshop

Venue: PUCIT Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore

PUCIT-ACM Student Chapter offered a half day workshop on the 4 Vs (Volume, Variety, Velocity and Veracity) of Big Data and Common algorithms from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Language. This workshop was presented by Dr. Muhammad Shahzad Cheema who is currently working as a Data Scientist at DHL and has formerly worked as a Lecturer at PUCIT.

·       Take Away Books program

From last two years PASC offers Take Away Books programs. Facilitating students with the list of books given for free in both the campuses of PUCIT: Allama Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam. In this program course-books take from students which are not in their use and donate to students who need them. Although, as a reminder to all interested, due to the limited amount of books available, these will be given on the FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS. We’ve done our part with help from a lot of you, but now it’s all on you.

Also, the students who donated their books will get preference over the rest. And for every bid they make, they get the chance to choose 3 of the books that they need. 3 books for the course of the year.


·       Big Data Workshop

Big Data is a relatively new idea in the market and is found everywhere nowadays. The past decade has seen considerable developments with big data algorithms, but significant challenges remain in the field.Since the students of PUCIT are majoring in IT related fields, a workshop on big data and its management was much needed so as to prepare them to have information related to every new idea in the field when they leave the university and enter the professional world. The aim of this workshop was to gather experts on the said field and have them expound their vast knowledge to the students.


·       Motivational & Career Seminar

Studies, especially when you reach the bachelors level where it’s not just about the books it’s also about the professional life, can be a bit over-whelming and scary for students. Which is precisely why PASC thought it fitting to organize a motivational and career workshop for the students of PUCIT. Throughout history, great speakers have touched the lives of millions of people and our motivational speakers inspire students to stay in university, become leaders, and prepare for life after graduation. Mr. Tauseef inspired our students to follow their dreams and achieve their goals. Among other things, he helped students in succeeding in studies, improving their relationships, developing a positive attitude, becoming healthy, achieving financial prosperity, and having more fun in life while maintaining a balance.


·       Game On’ 16

The gaming era continues to evolve and surprise everyone with its cutting-edge technology and is unlikely to dissolve anytime soon. Being one to work in step with the era, and since all study and no fun leads to uninterested students and Competition incites the urge for success, PASC arranged a much anticipated gaming event for the students of PUCIT which featured multiple video gaming competitions with games like Fifa, Tekken, Call of Duty, mobile games and many more. This event was like a breath of fresh air for the students and provided them the much needed break from studies with a little healthy competition.

·       ICANN and the Domain Name System (DNS) Seminar

PUCIT-ACM Student Chapter(PASC) brought you a chance to learn about ICANN and the Domain Name System(DNS) first hand from the Stakeholder Engagement Manager of ICANN for the Middle East; Mr. Fahd Batayneh. 
ICANN is a nonprofit organization that is responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the namespaces of the Internet, ensuring the network's stable and secure operation. The Domain Name System is considered to be one of the nerve systems of the Internet and PASC is providing you the opportunity to discover ICANN and DNS at Punjab University College of Information Technology

·       Hour of Code (HOC)

 The Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week and reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hourintroduction to computer science and computer programming and can be organized by anyone, anywhere. Since the root of all degrees being taught in our esteemed university is computing, PASC thought it befitting to arrange this event in PUCIT, the aim of which was to encourage students to learn computer science and develop their interest in the field in general. More than 300 students participated it. In just an hour, students learn how to code and fuel their passion to create amazing things like games, apps, and even emojis.


·       Adobe Photoshop workshop

 It’s hard to imagine the world without Photoshop these days and its remarkable image editing tools have been used in everything from Hollywood blockbusters to Internet memes.But as powerful a tool as Photoshop is, it can be a little intimidating. Which is why, PUCIT ACM-Student Chapter arranged a Photoshop Workshop for the students of PUCIT that taught them the basics to begin their journey to Photoshop mastery. The event took place in both the campuses and witnessed an active turnout in both the events where students were eager to learn all about graphics and take their knowledge in the field one step further.


·       Brain of PUCIT (BOP)

Venue: PUCIT Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore 

An event organized for all the students of both campuses (i.e. Allama Iqbal Campus and Quaid-e-Azam Campus) of PUCIT, constituted a quiz competition where students were be asked questions from various domains and topics, assessing their knowledge of IT. This event provided them a platform to showcase their IT skills, giving both them and their skills a recognition that they very much deserved. Also, students enjoyed competing and interacting with their fellow participants which helped promote a healthy and a friendly working environment among them. Competition such as this, with tangible rewards, help give the students a push in the right direction that gives them the encouragement to learn more. And that is precisely why PASC continues to arrange similar competition for the students of PUCIT.


·       Ruby on Rails (ROR) Workshop

Ruby on Rails, or simply Rails, is one of the fastest growing forms of programming and unfortunately is one of the few programming languages that are not being taught as a course to students of PUCIT. Therefore, PASC has taken it upon itself to arrange a workshop on this fast spreading idea so as to give the students a basic knowledge and understanding about the know-how of it. This workshop gave the students the base with enough knowledge for them to take it forward and explore this in-demand concept for themselves. The basic idea behind arranging workshops like this are to provide the students of PUCIT with a little extra information, outside of course, which will give them an upper hand when they enter the professional world.
