Industry Academia Linkages

Industry Academia Linkages

Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Shahzad Sarwar, Dean of the Faculty of Computing & IT (FCIT), the faculty has taken significant strides to fortify Industry-Academia Linkages. In this endeavor, FCIT organized multiple sessions featuring insights and guidance from its distinguished alumni.

These sessions aimed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge, ranging from the latest industry trends to the ethical considerations essential for conducting impactful Final Year Projects (FYPs). With active participation from students, these events fostered a platform for learning, collaboration, and innovation, bridging academic learning with real-world applications.

FCIT remains committed to preparing its students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital era through such initiatives.

The presentation titled "Beyond Graduation: Unveiling the Significance of Your Final Year Project," delivered by FCIT alumnus Muhammad Junaid Butt, Co-Founder & COO of Tiksom Limited, emphasized the crucial role of final year projects in shaping students' careers beyond graduation. The enlightening talk was aimed to highlight the opportunities that final year projects provide in bridging academia with industry. It encouraged students to view their projects not just as academic requirements but as platforms for innovation, career development, and future professional growth. The event was held on July 4, 2024, at the FCIT Quaid-e-Azam Campus, and on July 9, 2024, at the Allama Iqbal Campus.

The talk titled "Dos & Don’ts of FYP" delivered by Mr. Muhammad Ahmed Buksh, co-founder of Cogent Labs and an FCIT alumnus with over 7 years of experience in Pakistan's software industry, was an insightful session aimed at guiding students on effective practices for their final year design projects (FYDPs).

Hosted by the Faculty of Computing and IT (FCIT) at the Quaid-e-Azam Campus on August 5, 2024, the session emphasized the critical role of FYPs in demonstrating technical and problem-solving skills, which are essential for professional growth. Mr. Buksh provided actionable advice, including how to scope projects effectively, leverage technological trends, and avoid common pitfalls like bias, procrastination, and herd mentality. He also encouraged students to own their ideas, understand them thoroughly, and approach their work with integrity and innovation.

This event showcased FCIT's dedication to fostering industry-academia linkages and empowering students to excel in their academic and professional endeavors under the mentorship of Dr. Muddassira Arshad, Dr. Arifa Mirza, with support & vision of Dean Dr. Shahzad Sarwar.

The talk titled "From Idea to Implementation: Selecting the Ideal FYP Tech Stack" was presented by Mr. Fahad Azeem, Co-Founder & CTO of Tiksom Limited and an alumnus of FCIT, on August 13, 2024, at the Quaid-e-Azam Campus. The session, hosted by the Faculty of Computing and IT (FCIT) aimed to equip final year project (FYP) students with insights into selecting the most effective technological stack for their projects.

With over 12 years of industry experience in driving successful projects, Mr. Azeem shared his expertise on various topics, including the categories of mobile, web, and desktop applications, alongside the latest trends in development technologies. He elaborated on different tech stacks such as Web Development and Mobile Development stacks and outlined key criteria for choosing the most appropriate stack for specific project needs. Emphasizing alignment with industry demands, he guided students on selecting technologies and programming languages that cater to evolving market trends.

This session was part of FCIT's ongoing efforts to strengthen industry-academia linkages, empowering students to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical implementation and make informed decisions in their professional journeys.

Fulbright Degree Program

The Fulbright Master's and PhD Program funds graduate study in the United States. Funded by the United States Department of State, these grants cover tuition, required textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance. USEFP also assists with the visa process.

For the Master's degree program, eligible candidates will have either a four-year Bachelor's degree or a Bachelor's and Master's combination totaling 16 years of formal education from an accredited university. Recent graduates are strongly encouraged to apply, except for MBA and Public Policy/Administration applicants, who require 2 years of work experience.

For the PhD degree program, eligible applicants will have a Master's, M.Phil or comparable degree (a minimum of 18 years of formal education) from an accredited university. It is highly desirable that candidates have work experience in teaching, research, or the public sector in Pakistan.

For both the Master's and PhD programs, all academic disciplines are eligible, except clinical medicine. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE General) is required for all applicants. Under the new scoring system, a minimum score of 145 is required on each section of the GRE examination, with a higher score on the section most applicable to your field of study.

Applicants must also possess a high level of fluency in spoken and written English. The selected candidates will be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

All successful candidates are required to sign a contract with USEFP and, for successful PhD candidates, a bond with the HEC that binds them to return to Pakistan immediately after their program in the U.S. and serve the country for the number of years equivalent to the length of their scholarship program. This contract is redeemable on a year-for-year basis minimum of two years; as long as a person fulfills the service requirement, he or she will pay nothing.
