The University of the Punjab also referred as Punjab University, is a public, research, coeducational higher education institution located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Punjab University is the oldest public university in Pakistan which was formally established by the British Government after convening the first meeting for establishing higher education institutions in October 1882 at Simla. Punjab University was the fourth university to be established by the British colonial authorities in the Indian subcontinent; the first three universities were established in other parts of British India.
The University comprises five campuses, 19 Faculties, 08 Constituent Colleges, and 138 departments, centers, and institutes. The University also has 658 affiliated colleges. It has 991 full-time/regular and 300 part-time faculty members involved in teaching/research and 49,520 on-campus students. (29,588 Morning, 18,838 Evening and 1,094 Diploma students) Punjab University has been ranked first among large-sized multiple faculty universities by the HEC in 2012. There are also two Nobel Laureates among the university's alumni and former staff. Additionally, the university is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities of the United Kingdom. According to the recently issued rankings of Asian universities by QS World Universities Rankings, the university jumped from the 232nd to 193rd position, improving its position by 39 places. It ranks 251–300 in Agriculture and Forestry, 501–550 in Physics & Astronomy and 501–550 in Chemistry according to QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019.

Over eight thousand employees and teachers of the University and their families including fathers, mothers, husband and children are entitled for free medical treatment. Medical facilities are also available to the retired employees and their families. The clinics are working both at the Allama Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam Campuses. More than 600 patients visit the University Clinics daily. Emergency services are also available round the clock. The critically ill patients are referred to Sheikh Zayed, Jinnah and Punjab Institute of Cardiology hospitals for indoor treatment. The hospitalization expenses are also covered by the university. The Health Centre arranges Anti-Dengue Spray and its awareness sessions in the university premises. It also conducts a Breast Cancer Awareness Program every year. |

At present the medical staff consists of one Chief Medical Officer (Consultant Physician), Three Senior Medical Officers, Four lady Medical Officers, Two Male Medical Officers, One Dental Surgeon, one Ophthalmologist, One part-time Radiologist, Two female Pharmacist, One Physiotherapist, One Social Welfare Officer and One Psychologist SCAS. |

COVID-19 Mental Health Helpline
The COVID-19 MENTAL HEALTH HELP LINE is a national helpline set up by the Institute of Applied Psychology, University of the Punjab, Lahore during the wake of coronavirus crisis. The volunteer psychologists will provide free and confidential mental health support to people in emotional distress 7 days a week. Institute of Applied Psychology is committed to address the mental health issues due to COVID-19. Coronavirus and lock down pose a range of challenges for individuals and families. The situation is stressful for everyone and it is normal to be anxious and worried. This helpline aims to provide information and suggestions about how to cope in this difficult time. This helpline is not intended to be a resource for people who require screening for COVID-19 or are experiencing a mental health crisis. The mental health helpline will only cater for psychological needs related to coronavirus; we will not be dealing with already diagnosed patients with psychological concerns. We suggest such patients to continue their therapy with their respective mental health professionals. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis and cannot find a mental health professional our volunteers will refer you to respective mental health professionals after doing the initial screening.

Punjab University Transport Services
The University of the Punjab is one of the largest Public Sector University and is dedicated to make life for its students as comfortable as possible within the available means. Transport service is provided at a very subsidized rate for its students and employees from all over Lahore and its suburbs. Shuttle service between Allama Iqbal Campus and Quaid-e-Azam Campus is also arranged at regular intervals. Transport is also provides to students for outdoor activities, sightseeing, picnic, excursion, study and field tour etc. For this purpose the university has a total of 55 buses. The university is in the process of purchasing more vehicles to make transport facility more accessible and comfortable for the students and employees.
To ensure smooth functioning and to provide guidelines to the students and employees, a transport wing has been established headed by Senior Transport Officer; working under the supervision of Resident Officer-1. The transport wing is located near the Sheikh Zaid Islamic Centre and Mr. Muhammad Iqbal Awan is Senior Transport Officer.

Punjab University Students Hostels
University of Punjab caters students almost from all over Pakistan and foreign countries. The university provides hostel facility to most of the out-stationed boys and girls. The PhD students are mostly allocated independent rooms so that they may concentrate on their course and research work properly. There are a total of 28 hostels, out of which 16 are for boys and 12 for girls. Approximately 7000 students stay in these hostels.
In order to supervise hostels, there is a Chairman Hall Council who is overall responsible for the allocation of rooms in different hostels. The Chairman is usually a senior professor of the University. He is supported with a number of officers and officials to manage the allocation of hostels to the students and repair of these from time to time. Each hostel is controlled by a Warden, a Superintendent and an Assistant Superintendent who are faculty members of the University. Their residences are attached with the respective hostels to facilitate the students and to resolve any problems and issues as and when arise.

Directorate of Student’s Affairs (DSA)
The Directorate of Students Affairs (DSA) works actively to coordinate the various aspects of student life and development by generating a liaison between students, faculty and university administration. In June 1966 Student Teacher Centre was established which was run by Directorate of Student Affairs. The center accommodates the offices of various cultural societies of the University. There are special halls for indoor games, public lectures, seminars and conferences at the center. It also includes 8 furnished guest rooms for academic visitors to the University.
Directorate of Students Affairs plays the role of a backbone of university and offers a platform for wide variety of curricular and co-curricular activities to the students so that they can enjoy pleasant environment and enriched campus life. The underlying fundamental mission of Directorate of Student Affairs, however, is to ensure that students are safe, cared for, well treated and satisfied with their higher education.

Student Teacher Center (STC)
Numerous students’ good-will mission/study tours from various other universities and colleges of Pakistan frequently visit the university. They are provided with boarding and transport to create maximum good-will between the visiting students and the students of the university.
The Student Teacher Centre became fully operative in June 1966. Apart from housing the office of the Department of Student Affairs which runs the Centre's programs, the center also accommodates the offices of various cultural societies of the University. There are special halls for indoor games, public lectures, seminars and conferences of the center. It also includes 8 furnished guest rooms for academic visitors to the University.
The Centre provides many amenities which students may need in day to day life. These include a modern shopping center, a public telephone, a motor bus for conveyance of small groups of students on special occasions, and a spacious cafeteria. It also caters for receptions and various University and departmental functions. Counseling and guidance services to students are also provided by the Centre. Similarly, the University Foreign Information Bureau set up at the Center deals with the problems of students of the University who are desirous of seeking admission in foreign universities and other institutions.

Student Counselling Services (SCS)
Student counselling Services was established in 2008 by University of the Punjab Lahore. In 2009, its office was established in the premises of University Health Centre. The Directorate of Students Affairs facilitates the counselling Services to University Students. As Directorate of Student Affairs coordinates the development of different services and programs and serves as an advocate for students needs across the University. Student Counselling Services is also one of such programs which help students to meet life's challenges with success.
Counselling is a process through which one person helps another by purposeful conversation in a supportive and understanding atmosphere in a professional manner. This conversation then leads to come up with solutions which are most feasible. Most common concerns students usually share are adjustment to University or hostel life, indecision about choice of subject, poor time management, exams anxiety family or relationship problems, career or future concerns etc.

Doctoral Program Coordination Committee (DPCC)
University of the Punjab is the premier institution of higher education in the country. Historically this university has played a leading role in the subcontinent ever since it was established in 1882. The University continues to play its role by producing large number of graduates in over 65 disciplines. One of its goals is to promote development-oriented research. In this connection, University offers MS / M.Phil./Ph.D. Programmes in 49 disciplines. For an effective coordination between various departments of this University regarding these Programmes, Doctoral Programme Coordination Committee (DPCC) was established in 2001. It is a non-teaching department, in the beginning DPCC office was located in Botany Department. It was shifted to Centre for High Energy Physics and later on in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. Now it is working in Botany Department under the supervision of Chairperson, Prof. Dr. Anjum Nasim Sabri.

Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC)
As per directions of Higher Education Commission, University of the Punjab established Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) in 2006. Initially, QEC, University of the Punjab, was allocated in the premises of Institute of Quality & Technology Management, University of the Punjab, Lahore. In July 2012, QEC was shifted to the premises of Centre for Undergraduate Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore. In December 2013, QEC was shifted to its separate newly constructed building at 1st Floor of Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of the Punjab, Lahore.
Recent attempts in improving the quality of education have tended to rely on National and International Educational Policy reforms that build on rich research findings through linking educational inputs to the students’ achievement.

Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC)
HEC aims at motivating and facilitating the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to make research a top priority for a sustainable economic growth and future knowledge economy. For this purpose, a centre is being established in all universities to serve as a pivotal point, encompassing all the research activities - from development of research proposal to the commercialization of research products - under a single umbrella. These centres will be called "Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORICs)".
Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), University of the Punjab, established in 2010. From Inception, ORIC successfully organized eight Innovation Summits each year. Now, ORIC, University of the Punjab is organizing "9th Invention to Innovation Summit", Punjab-2020 on April 01-02, 2020. It’s a two-day event to promote applied and commercially viable technology transfer from academia to industry. Summit helps your institution to display potential technologies in front of relevant industry for commercialization and academic persons for collaborations and linkages. Business Incubation Centre (BIC)
Business incubation centre (BIC-PU) has been established in the university with the aim to mobilize practical impact of research being carried out by the academic body of students and faculty. The HEC also supports the establishment of Business Incubation Centres (BICs) in HEIs of Pakistan to provide basic infrastructure and allied facilities for researchers and young entrepreneurs who are interested in developing early-stage business ventures. To further strengthen the efforts to commercialize research and innovation, Higher Education Commission (HEC) has provided collaborative funding to BIC-PU under a grant agreement.
